“The ever increasing necessity and desire to remain connected to the network and do work while being on the move has resulted in a significant growth of interest in the applications/tools which can do editing and collaborate with other devices. While working in daily life most of the time we use office applications for taking notes, making reports and presentations. With the increase in processing power and storage capabilities of mobile devices, we need these applications to be available on our mobile devices, so that we can continue doing our tasks even when we are mobile. FreOffice is one such light weight application which provides a support to view and edit office document (Word/Presentation/Excel sheet) on Maemo/MeeGo based mobile devices. FreOffice being an open source project is attracting developers and has opened doors for the innovation in handling documents on mobile devices.”

FOSS is one of the biggest platform  for open source developers/contributors in India. This year FOSS is organizing the developers meet from 15th Dec to 17th Dec, in Bangalore. NOKIA is the Technology sponsor for FOSS 2010 event. In the Foss, we will be listening to a lot of open source contributors  and will get chance to learn from them. There are some mini conferences also which will focus on a particular area. MeeGO mini conference is one of such event in FOSS 2010. MeeGo mini conference will run all the three days. In this mini conference NOKIA is planning to have some very exciting talks, hands on and Demos on MeeGo. I am really vary excited to see the event.

Step 1: Download the Flasher 3.5 appropriate to your system and install it.

Step 2: Download the latest firmware for your device.

• Click Here to go to the firmware site.
• Enter IMEI number of your N900 device in the field “Product Id”. ( To See IMEI number of your device use  *#06# in the dialer).
• Accept the license agreement.
• You will be directed to the firmware download page. Here you can see lot of Images
• You can download Image based on your preferences. I used RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin which is the “Third Maemo 5 Global release for Nokia N900″.
• Now you have the required image and ready to flash your device.

Step 3: Switch off your mobile.

Step 4: Make sure that neither  PC Suite nor Ovi Suite is running on your system. Now connect your mobile with PC using USB cable.

Step 5. Open the terminal. You can see the flaser options using  flasher-3.5 –help in the terminal.

Step 6. Remove the battery from the mobile. Now the time has come to execute the flash command, and i assume that you have downloaded the firmware image.

Step 7. Enter the following command:

“sudo flasher-3.5 -F  RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin  -f -R”

Step 8. It will run some steps and then display the message ” waiting for suitable device”. Now insert the battery into the mobile. It will start flashing your device.

Step 9. Don’t disconnect your mobile during this time. After the flashing is done, remove battery, then remove USB from the mobile. Insert Battery and boot your mobile with new Image.

Step 10: Enjoy the latest firmware on your device.You are done.

Important Note:

1. This post is for developers or experienced users only.
2. I have tested these steps on my NOKIA N900. Still I recommend that You do experiment at your own risk.
3. Your feedback/Comments/Queries are welcome.
4. Take the backup of all your contacts and documents from the device.
5. Steps given above are tested with Ubuntu 10.o4. You can Also use same steps with other OS.

To enable Maemo extras repository follow these steps:

• Go into the Application manager.

• Tap the menu -> Application catalogs

• Tap on “new”.

• Catalogue name: Maemo Extras

• Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/

• Distribution: fremantle

• Components: free non-free

• un-check Disabled box.

• Tap on Save button.

Similarly for enabling Maemo Extra-devel repositories follow as:

• Go into the Application manager.

• Tap the menu -> Application catalogs

• Tap on “new”.

• Catalogue name: Maemo Extras-devel

• Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/

• Distribution: fremantle

• Components: free non-free

• un-check Disabled box.

• Tap on Save button.

MeeGo

(A Step towards Open Source Innovation by NOKIA and Intel)

NOKIA and Intel are working together to bring a new Open Source operating system and application development platform by combining best features of NOKIA’s Maemo and Intel’s Moblin project. MeeGo is a linux based  platform that is capable of running over multiple devices as handsets, netbooks, connected TV’s , Vehicle information systems..etc. Some of the important Goals of MeeGo project are:

1. To combining best of two ecosystems and give user a better experience.
2. To give developers freedom for innovation (by keeping it open source)
3. Involving community to develop and thus delivering user requirements fast.
4. Targeting multiple devices.
5. Providing rich cross platform development environment and tools.
6. Supporting multiple hardware architecture.

This is a great pleasure for me to inform you that I have completed my internship with NOKIA on 15th july 2010. It was really a great experience for me. I enjoyed working with Open Source community. During internship I met with great contributers to the open source in person. That is all because of the NOKIA. I am proud to announce that I have completed my project entitled ” Enabling editing and Implementing Collaborative editing for FreOffice”. This application is available for the users on maemo-extra devel repositories to download.

I am feeling lucky to get the opportunity to work with NOKIA research. My Internship started on 1st Jan 2010 and will get over by 30th June 2010. I started working from college lab initially. I started working with Qt and Collaborative editing. Picked up kobby and put mysql based authentication server in between kobby server and clients so that clients can contact to server only after authentication. Then I started working on koffice. Koffice is office suite developed in Qt. It is an open source project having 13 applications. I started with understanding koffice design and architecture. Then started fixing bugs in koffice. Last week NOKIA gave training about Koffice development. Thanks to Boudewijn Rempt for spending a week with us and giving training on Koffice and open source development.

Now I have joined NOKIA office as intern and my project is to “Enable Editing feature in FreOffice and implementing Collaborative Editing”. FreOffice is a Koffice based document viewer for Maemo based devices. Work is already started and is in full swing. I hope that I will be able to finish basic editing features by the end of May 2010.
